From the trails
Up to Rohn is good snow conditions, drifting snow in the burn area. Nikolai to McGrath deep snow conditions. Between Ophir and Poorman this evening, clear with 30 MPH hour winds and some blowing snow.

He says the trails are terrible and people have gotten lost. The current temperature at the time of this update was -50F.

From Tim Bodony of KIYU Galena
The river trail is open and marked from Galena all the way down to Kaltag. Ruby Search and Rescue marked the section from Ruby to the mouth of the Yuki River around the beginning of January. The river trail from Yuki to Galena is put in, but needs trail markers. Trail conditions are better than average, and certainly better than last year, and more snow is falling this week (Jan 14-18).

Nome to Kaltag
Average trail conditions. Minimal snow from Island Point-Old Woman. Norton Sound bay trail is approx two miles off shore and new young ice between Koyuk and Island Point since I was last there. With Weather conditions cold……the ice should be ok now. Elim- Walla-Walla ice should be good now….I took the back route. (per Evan Booth)

Iditarod Trail Breakers Report
that the trail is set in past the Happy River going up the steep hill. Snow conditions are reported...deep. Trail Breaking efforts will be continued at a later date.

Finger Lake has reported a minimal amount of fuel available, but some on order.

Tom Kriska from Fairbanks reports
that he has broken the trail from Fairbanks to Manley. The snow conditions are a little better towards Manley. Some open leads in the Rivers, but nothing unusual to report.

Mike Fuller Reports from Big Lake to
to the Susitna River with the lack of snow, the trail is rough and onto Skwentna, the snow gets better but there are still lots of hazards along the way. He would like to add, he appreciates Ken Lee\'s hospitality on the trail this weekend.

the Trail between Rohn and Nikolai(THE BURN) is all white, but witnessed some open leads on the South Fork of the Kuskokwim River(Not Unusual).

Going To Skwentna?
The trail is in to Shell and possibly to Finger Lake with the new snow from this week. Be Careful...still plenty of of obstacles!

Justin Esmailka Reports
Galena to Nulato trail across land is open, but not the River. Nulato to Kaltag river trail is open and Kaltag to Unalkleet portage is open. Some creeks still flowing water.

Lahka reports from Nome:
Nome set a record yesterday for the amount of snowfall on December 11th . Wind minimal, so snow has covered all areas nicely. Still very warm with temperatures in the low 30’s, so waterways are not quite frozen up yet.

Ken Lee reports - to get to Skwentna, consider taking a boat
Weather has been cooler and under 20 and the rivers are starting to get slushy....Just need more cold.

Justin Esmailka reports Trail between Kaltag and Unalakleet
Trail is halfway done with 2-4 feet of Snow. Justin says that they will be grooming the trail this year.

Nome Trail Report:
Nome and surrounding communities are now traveling around by snowmobile. Conditions between White Mountain and Golovin are good and travel is taking place daily. Travel between Golovin and Elim is still very limited as conditions are not quite good enough yet. Trail conditions between Elim and Koyuk are good and residents are traveling regularly between the two villages. Unalakleet and Shaktoolik have a fair amount of snow and travel by snowmobile between the two villages is taking place. Travel is not yet taking place between Unalakleet and Kaltag.

In 1984 the first Iron Dog race started in McGrath and finished in Nome due to poor conditions. Participants had to fly their snowmobiles to McGrath.
