Expedition Class
The Iron Dog Expedition Class is a non competitive trail ride that can be equally as tough and rewarding as what the Pro’s do. It gives participants valuable experience and a taste of what racing the Pro Class could be like. Expedition Class riders launch their adventure from Big Lake, Alaska and finish in Nome. The Expedition Class route DOES NOT include the Red Dog Loop. Teams are required to be a minimum of two persons on their own snowmachines. There are no specific requirements for the brand, CC or type of snowmachine when participating in the Expedition Class.
Expedition Class participants encounter much of the same challenges of the Pro Class without the competitive pressure of the race. Expedition Class will start, after the Pro Teams have departed, same day, Saturday, 2/15/25 and meet up with the Pro Teams in Nome.
A Halfway Pro Class and finishing Expedition Class “Celebration Banquet” will be held Wednesday, 2/19/25 in Nome. Banquet time TBD.
Registration for the 2025 Expedition Class will open on October 7, 2024 and close on November 22, 2024.
Quick overview for novice or first-time riders
Iron Dog Expedition Class riders are provided fuel, oil and basic instructions about the route but are generally expected to cover personal expenses such as accommodation, food and any unexpected expenses. Proper planning and discussion with veteran riders will give riders a better sense of what to expect when traveling in remote/rural Alaska. Iron Dog transportation partners have traditionally offered generous deals to assist riders in getting their snowmachines back from Nome. Most important, when in doubt – ask!
