In past years, the noncompetitive version of the Iron Dog Pro Class Race has been known as the Trail Class, or Recreation Class. This year, the new term, “Expedition,” connotes the adventure that often is a launching point for future pro class races. Last year, Palmer brothers Joseph and Israel Hale were the first of the noncompetitive racers to reach Nome. This year, they are entered as rookies in the Pro Class.

“The Expedition Race class start went very well and we had the biggest turnout I’ve seen at a rec-class ever,” said Iron Dog GPS and timing official Jake Goodell, who also is on the Iron Dog Board of Directors. “People are excited!”

This year’s Expedition Class event includes two teams from New Hampshire – one a father son duo – and two three-person teams. The riders generally overnight in Puntilla and wait until daylight to get fully going. They are expected to start arriving into Nome by Monday, Feb. 15.
