Wisconsin rider signs up on deadline day

Iron Dog is all over the map this year.

The latest to register for the 2021 Iron Dog is Seth Kroenke of Shawano, Wisconsin. The Expedition Class rider joins 12 others who collect their mail outside of Alaska, led by Team 37’s Mark Fosty and Ben Hildebrand of Manitoba, who are heading back for another run. Also returning is Cody Moen of Washington (Team 8) and Dave Wagner of California (Team 11). Daniel Thomas and Mark Nelson ride for Team 40 and hail from Utah, while Scott Campbell will represent Pennsylvania and ride for Team 93. Also representing the East Coast are four riders from New Hampshire, led by veteran Kim Bergeron. He and Jason Bergeron are riding under the Team 51 flag, while Jean-Pierre Bernier and Glen Britton comprise Team 52. Jim Huttemier of Minnesota of Team 53 rounds out the slate of visiting riders.

The World’s Longest, Toughest Snowmobile Race is slated to start on Big Lake on Saturday, Feb. 13, head to Nome for the NAC halfway banquet, then hightail it to Koyuk, Buckland, Selawik, Kiana, Noorvik, Kotzebue and back through Buckland to Koyuk. The racers will turn south down the coast to finish on Big Lake Feb. 20. The additional loop creates a total course mileage of 2,645.

Pro class teams will leave the Big Lake starting chute on Saturday, Feb. 13, and return Feb. 20, covering some 2,600 miles during the 38th running of the Iron Dog. Expedition Class (formerly Rec Class) riders will start Thursday, Feb. 11 on Big Lake and finish in Nome some five days later. 

Pro Class registration closes Oct. 31, 2020. Entry fees per person are the same as last year: Pro class entry is $4,100; Expedition class entry is $2,700.
